Experiences with the AI Tool Noteless in Helse Møre og Romsdal

Since January this year, Helse Møre og Romsdal has piloted AI-driven medical documentation, becoming the first health trust in the country to do so. The experiences so far show that the tool has streamlined and simplified medical record-keeping.

Benefits and User Experiences

Consultant Anette Monica Johansen reports that Noteless increases efficiency, improves the flow of conversations, and frees up time for more patients. The program provides a solid foundation for completed notes but requires quality assurance and active involvement from the user. Patients react positively as long as they are informed about how the system works and that confidentiality is maintained.

Ethical Considerations and Challenges

The use of Noteless raises few ethical concerns when the program is used responsibly. Challenges include the need for clear speech near the microphone, correct medication names, and awareness of following up on unclear statements.

Implementation and Training

ICT manager Odd Arne Maridal explains that the project was initiated following inspiration from the Medical Association. The implementation has gone well, especially regarding information security. The pilot project has included training through simulated consultations and a focus on awareness in interview situations.

Future Plans and Technology Development

The health trust aims to expand usage to all interested employees in psychiatry, and eventually also in somatics. Work is ongoing to integrate the tool with the EPIC journal system and to collaborate with Norwegian providers to adapt language models to the local context. They remain open to solutions from multiple vendors.

Midterm Evaluation

An evaluation of 30 employees in DPS (District Psychiatric Centers) and BUP (Child and Adolescent Psychiatry) shows high satisfaction with the tool. Users report improved documentation, increased patient safety, and time savings of 30 to 120 minutes daily. Suggested improvements include more templates, better transcription accuracy, and more flexible note structures.
